Life Stories - Photography as Therapy
All of the sessions are tailored to the interests of the individual group. Participants will be encouraged to contribute and experience hands-on work as much as possible. Each student will walk away with his or her own piece of work, as the emphasis is on, ‘Look what I have created’. Cameras and equipment can be provided, or participants may provide their own.Since photographs can be very evocative and hold multiple meanings for different people, they serve as invaluable prompts for cross-generational and cross-cultural dialogues. Often when people take their own photographs and then debate with each other about what they see,
and how, and why they see it that way, it opens the door to explore issues that might not otherwise be discussed.
Photography forces us to talk about perspective, what is central and what is marginal, and how it need not necessarily be so. Photography itself doesn't accomplish this — it is the collaborative and participatory nature of working with, and learning from, each other that promotes new perceptionThe Life Stories programme is an in-depth course working with our Photographer and Art Therapist. These sessions are for individuals or groups and are closed and confidential due to the therapeutic nature of the project.
The process of taking a photograph can stimulate a discussion between the individual and facilitator or within the group. This could be about the gap between how they see themselves, how they think that others see them, and who they wish to become, photographs of what makes them happy, sad, calm or angry.
