The Life Stories programme is an in-depth course working with our Photographer and Art Therapist. These sessions are for individuals or groups and are closed and confidential due to the therapeutic nature of the project. The process of taking a photograph can stimulate a discussion between the individual and facilitator or within the group. This could be about the gap between how they see themselves, how they think they are seen by others and who they wish to become. Since photographs can be very evocative and hold multiple meanings for different people, they serve as invaluable prompts for cross generational and cross cultural dialogues. When young people take their own photographs and then debate with each other about what they see, and how and why they see it that way, it opens the door to explore issues that might not be discussed in school settings or with or among adults. Photography forces us to talk about perspective, what is central and what is marginal, and how it need not necessarily be so. But photography itself doesn't accomplish this — it is the collaborative and participatory nature of working with and learning from each other that promotes new perceptions. Question: Is photography about changing how students see themselves or changing society’s perception? It's both. Answer: can be for a short 2 hour taster session or can extend to a ten week course.
